Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a somewhat rare microphone that doesn’t come around on Ebay too often. This is a Turner Dynamic (model 401) microphone manufactured in the 1950’s for just a few years and was sold for broadcasting and T.V purposes. The mic was part of the higher end 400 series and was a radical newer look for the company allowing the user to actually hold the mic like a modern stick mic if needed or simply mounted on the clip provided. This 401 comes with the original data sheet, mic clip, leather mic pouch, newer cable and 401 box. Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old Turner catalog I have along with it’s basic characteristics and price. This seldom seen mic is set at high impedance (though the impedance is adjustable) and deliver a strong signal that only gets better with a little gain. The mic has that classic old school “rockabilly” tone that’s mostly void of bass but again, the mic is adjustable. This would be ideal for a HAM radio set up. The 410 came in a painted finish called “slate blue” which has a very grey overtone to it. Turner and other mic manufacturers offered these mic in both chrome and neutral painted finishes. The painted mics were offered as the chrome bodies caused a lot of glare with strong lighting that could havoc with the old t.v cameras of the day that could not deal with reflections well. As you can see this sophisticated 400 series came in the 401, 402, 403 & 404 model. This was the higher end dynamic mic of the day for Turner when it was introduced but these were only sold for a few years before being discontinued do you rarely see them around. This is only the 3rd 401 I have ever come across. This somewhat resembles the more common Turner 57D model but has an even more aggressive and industrial look. The design was slim and modern for it’s time and extended far out towards the singer or broadcaster allowing more space between the stand and the user. As you can see the overall cosmetic finish of this Turner 401 is pretty damn nice. Only a couple small scratches in the stock grey paint but there are zero dents or fractures. The screen has no deformation or tarnish. The 401 mic clip has a bit more wear but still very good and there plenty of tension that is adjustable. In my own opinion I would give her a solid 8 on a scale of 1 – 10. It’s certainly worthy of any vintage microphone collection and ready for any live event. The mic is appx 10 1/2 inches long X 1 inch wide and weighs virtually nothing. Uber lite weight. The mic takes a standard XLR cable which is included and it’s in excellent shape. The cable is not original but will do you justice with 9 feet to work with. Soft, pliable and has a quality Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amplifiers. The data sheet is very good condition and has a ton of info on this mic that will come in handy. The leather mic sleeve is also included and also in very nice condition. A very nice, rare accessory and a great place to store the mic while not in actual use. The 401 box does show wear but again, a great accessory and a good place to store the mic while not in use. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE…USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY. The mic clip will screw onto any desk or flor stand you have and if you need a period stand just let me know as I have quite a few for sale.
