KEITH HARING was a Pennsylvania-born American artist who’s NEO-EXPRESSIONIST / POP-ART imagery developed out of his original work as a NEW YORK CITY GRAFFITI ARTIST. He is known for creating his own, unique, cartoon-like VISUAL LANGUAGE, by which his work is easily identifiable—and highly popular in his brief lifetime, and beyond to this day. He is considered to be one of America’s greatest artists of the last part of the 20th century. Internationally renowned, large canvas works by Haring now range in the 100,000s to multiple millions of dollars. Keith Haring sadly died at only 31 years old, of AIDS, in 1990. THE PAINTING This is a UNIQUE, hand-drawn and painted, GOUACHE PAINT & INK FELT-TIP MARKER PEN work from the 1980s. Made in BLACK MARKER-PEN OUTLINE and VARIOUS BRIGHTLY-COLORED GOUACHE PAINTS on WHITE PAPER. Untitled, it depicts a GROUP of EIGHT LAUGHING FACES in various VIVID COLORS, each one bearing THREE EYES. The ORIGINS of this unique, delightful and humorous work are as follows: Keith Haring created this original artwork specially as a “mechanical” (a graphic design term) for eventual reproduction in an arts magazine, as part of both an article and interview with Haring about his art and processes. It is believed to be the British arts magazine, ARTSCRIBE. This hand-painted work was made by Haring specifically for the magazine, to be shown alongside his interview. Whether it was ever published and in exactly what form is not known. Somewhat of a “niche” periodical, Artscribe ran from 1976 to 1992. In 1985 it changed hands. It is no longer published. Quite LARGE, the image view-size measures: 38″ x 17″ (96.5 cm x 43 cm). Mounted as a “float” over a black background in a glossy, black-lacquered frame that measures: 47″ x 26″ (119 cm x 66 cm). The drawing is HAND-SIGNED VERTICALLY, in the lower-right, in black marker-pen: Keith Haring. Not dated, circa 1980s. Absolutely an ORIGINAL INK & PAINT HANDMADE WORK; it is NOT a print or lithograph or any other kind of reproduction.
