His band, which he dubbed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows for this performance, was in a period of transition between the heavy psychedelic bluesy Experience and the more soulful, rhythmically dynamic Band of Gypsies. Hendrix seems to touch on every musical style — from jazz to blues to funk to soul to metal, and even a few that weren’t christened yet (fusion, punk). There is no more historic or more explosive a performance than LIVE AT WOODSTOCK.. By the time Hendrix and his band took the stage Monday morning at 9 a.m., hundreds of thousands had already escaped the rain, mud and chaos. But 25,000 dedicated souls remained to celebrate the performance of the most visionary force in rock, Jimi Hendrix.
