WHAT THE MANUFACTURER STATES ABOUT THE PRODUCT: “- Primary Use – Part assembly; running in; as a press-fitting lubricant where high temperature is a factor. – Special Characteristics – Wider and higher operating temperature range than organic oil based pastes; extreme loads; low speeds. – Physical Form – Black, soap thickened, silicone fluid based paste containing more than 60% MoS2. – Applications – Lubricating during running-in of gears, splines, journal bearings, cams; reducing torque in tightening threads and bolts; lubricating bearing shafts, O-rings, packings and seals, brake assemblies; press-fitting. – Temperature Range – Solids from –50 to 750 degrees Fahrenheit (-45 to 399 degrees Celsius); base oil from –40 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 to 232 degrees Celsius). – Limitations – Not recommended for use in pressure lines. FEATURES: – Paste lubrication up to 230ºC (446ºF) – Dry lubrication up to 450ºC (842ºF) – Good water resistance – Good volatilization properties – Compatible with many types of elastomers and plastics (test to insure compatibility) APPLICATIONS: – This product is used successfully on metal/metal combinations with frictional and contact surfaces, brake anchor plates, and the brake pistons of disc brakes. – Suitable for lubrication points with low to moderate loads and low speeds which are subjected to water and extreme temperatures. At temperatures above 230ºC (446ºF), the carrier volatilizes leaving virtually no residue and the remaining dry sliding film itself takes over the lubrication up to 450ºC (842ºF). – Suitable for lubricating parts consisting of materials that are not resistant to mineral oils.” Always follow the original equipment manufacturer’s lubrication instructions. NOTE: While this product is referred to by some as a grease and even Dow mentions its generic description as “molybdenum disulfide grease,” it is technically a paste. A grease is an “emulsion” (think of mayonnaise) of an oil with a “soap” emulsifier, commonly lithium stearate in the case of many greases. A paste is more of a “suspension” of solid particles, in this case the micronized molybdenum disulphide, in a liquid carrier, in this case the silicone base oil. Molykote M77 does contain lithium stearate which acts as a thickener and does help maintain the stability of the suspension and itself adds a bit of lubricity, but it is not, strictly speaking, a grease emulsion.
