Subject: 1936 Olympic Games – iconic picture of cinematographer Professor Walter Hege and an assistant filming for Leni Riefenstahl’s famous documentary movie “Olympia”. They are filming from the roof of the Olympic stadium stands. Inferior modern copies of this iconic image (as opposed to the authentic vintage 1936 photogravure plate which is being offered here) have been and are being sold all over the world (including the internet) with the idea that the female in this picture is Leni Riefenstahl herself – after careful research and examination of many film crew photographs from these 1936 Olympic Games, we have determined that the female in the picture is not Leni Riefenstahl, but rather an assistant to Hege and probably part of Riefenstahl’s film crew. Initially trained as a medical doctor, Paul Wolff devoted his life to photography, became a master in several genres and created brilliant imagery throughout his storied career. He became known in photography art circles as a “moderate modernist”. This image was made during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany to which Wolff, along with the infamous Leni Riefenstahl, were given VIP access and prime photographic vantage points by the Olympic Committee and the German government. Both Wolff and Riefenstahl gained widespread international fame as a result of their Olympic imagery and set new standards in elevating the art of professional sports photography. In later years the controversial Riefenstahl would be professionally “blackballed” as a result of her associations with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Such fate did not befall Dr. Paul Wolff who continued after World War II with his prolific photographic career. The spectacular and lavishly staged 1936 Olympic Games were hosted by what was then Nazi Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. Historic in several regards, this vintage gravure print is from a rare bound photogravure printing of Paul Wolff’s Olympic images published by Karl Specht Verlag in Germany in 1936. This vintage photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) from Finephoto. Under magnification this plate shows a tight “honeycomb” cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure print. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today.
